Research Summary
You are invited to take part in research about pressure to continue or not continue a pregnancy. We are seeking professionals’ experiences and understandings of coercion in abortion related decision making in Aotearoa New Zealand. While we are seeking the participation of many different professions, in this instance we invite Social Workers to participate. This research is focused on understanding reproductive coercion in abortion-related care in Aotearoa New Zealand. Abortion related reproductive coercion includes the pressure to and not to continue a pregnancy. The research involves two stages: 1) an anonymous online questionnaire, 2) one-on-one interviews (in person or via Zoom). Decisions to continue or not continue a pregnancy can happen in many different professional settings, not just in abortion clinics, as many different professions work with pregnant people. We therefore plan to include the following practitioners as participants: nurses, midwives, general practitioners, social workers, counsellors, gynaecologists, obstetricians, and abortion care providers. The research should generate understandings of what reproductive coercion looks like in Aotearoa New Zealand and how it might be responded to.
