It is with great and profound sadness we advise you all that a Totara has fallen in the forest of Tane and the oceans of Hinemoana. Whaea Hinewirangi Kohu-Morgan has passed away after a protracted illness. She was certainly a massive Totara in the forests of Tane and a strong advocate for Hinemoana of the deepest oceans. She often quoted: I’m sick of hearing about this ocean being called Tangaroa. Hinemoana herself is the vast ocean, she needed 3 husbands to take care of her…From the safe shoreline waters is kaukau, from where it’s no longer safe, from that point to the horizon, is Tangaroa and, from the horizon thereafter is Te Moana Nui a Kiwa, which brings in our Polynesian peoples. Three tāne to help take care of her, so why do we just call it Tangaroa?
Whaea was known to support the innate healing qualities inside each Wāhine and demonstrated these hundreds of times whilst on this earthly planet.
She was a very active member of several indigenous nations around the world and travelled extensively to share her knowledge. She will be missed in Aotearoa and the Indigenous people around the world.
He mihi he mihi ō te Poroporoaki te Rangatira tō waka ki te Atua.
Nō reira Kapiti hono tātai hono ki te hunga mate te hunga mate, te hunga ora
