Practice Guidance

COVID-19 vaccine and your professional responsibility

ANZASW strongly encourages all social workers to take up the opportunity to be vaccinated – unless this is medically contraindicated. Social workers have an ethical and professional obligation to protect and promote the health of clients and their whānau and vaccination has a crucial role to reduce the community risk of acquiring and further transmitting COVID-19.

ANZASW respects social worker’s rights to have their own opinions, however, there is no place for anti-vaccination messages in professional practice, nor any promotion of anti-vaccination claims, including on social media and advertising by social workers.

The Workshop website has some great tipsheets and advice to support conversations about vaccinations.

He aha te mahi pāpori? | What is social work?

The Global Definition of Social Work says:

Social work is a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people. Principles of social justice, human rights, collective responsibility and respect for diversities are central to social work.  Underpinned by theories of social work, social sciences, humanities and indigenous knowledges, social work engages people and structures to address life challenges and enhance wellbeing. (IFSW and IASSW)

Social workers in Aotearoa New Zealand must be registered with the Social Workers Registration Board. Social workers are qualified professionals who study either a four-year bachelor degree or a two-year applied masters degree.
