Registrations have now closed for this screening of DECULT VOICES – BEYOND BELIEF and live discussion.
Over 50,000 New Zealanders are present or former members of religious, spiritual or self-help cults. Many were born and raised in them and suffered physical, sexual or emotional abuse. Their trauma can last a lifetime. What are their struggles, and how can we support those survivors better and safeguard vulnerable communities?
Join us for the exclusive screening of the 20-minute documentary DECULT VOICES – BEYOND BELIEF that was shot during the first cult awareness conference in Ōtautahi Christchurch (here is a short trailer), followed by a presentation and Q&A with Anke Richter and Lindy Jacomb. The two advocates for cult recovery and justice will share their insights and bust some public misconceptions about high-control groups.
Anke Richter is an international journalist based in Lyttelton and the author of “CULT TRIP: Inside the world of coercion & control” (HarperCollins) which highlights the child sexual abuse at Centrepoint and Gloriavale. She has reported about cults across the world for the German and New Zealand media and was a research advisor for the documentary “Heaven and Hell: The Centrepoint Story” (TVNZ). As the founder and director of Decult, Anke organised the first cult awareness conference in Aotearoa in 2024 which was a sold-out success. Copies of Anke’s book will be available at a discounted price.
Lindy Jacomb was born into the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church (or Exclusive Brethren). At 20, she was excommunicated
by her family and community. Lindy has since become a founding member of the Olive Leaf Network, a charitable entity that provides aid and advocacy for former members of high-demand religious groups. Her organisation offers practical help, including workshops, and facilitated the first trainings for mental health workers with Decult keynote speaker Dr Gillie Jenkinson after the Decult conference.
This event has a maximum capacity, and registrations will close once venue capacity is reached. This is an in-person event and will not be recorded.
