Join Jenny Manuera and Wi Waikari from Manuera Life Development Services as they apply Māori models of practice to working with those who've experienced trauma. Using mythology, Māori concepts and a realm of tikanga-based models within the framework of 'Te Whare Tapa Whā', Jenny and Wi offer a range of tangible tools to apply in practice.

Jenny Manuera

Ngati Kahu ki Whangaroa toku iwi.

I have over 20 years of experience working in communities and agencies within Waikato and Tāmaki Makarau and I'm passionate about working with people from all works of lifes and specifically with my people – Māori. I have worked in Family Court, domestic violence , ACC sensitive claims and facilitating groups within both the community and within prisons. Prior to my counselling, I was in the role of trainer, literacy specialist for 7 years and now run my own business and company, Manuera Life Development Services Ltd, since 2015. I am married to my partner and business partner and I have two adult children, two stepchildren and one whangai daughter. I also have five mokopuna. I reside in South Auckland and work in both Auckland and Hamilton.  I am passionate about working in a holistic way of manaakitanga, wairuatanga and whakawhanaungatanga, within the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. I enjoy travel, music, yoga, walking and meeting new people of all ethnicities.

Ngati Porou

I have over 40 years of experience working in communities and agencies within Auckland and Waikato. I have worked in alcohol & drug and mental health organisations and also disabilities. Two of my favourite places of mahi were Presbyterian Support as social worker, working with the homeless and street kids and also as a social worker in Starship Hospital (incidental accidents) working with parents who had caused harm to their children. I also worked in Oncology. I spent 5 years in an urban marae as the Kaitiaki for a break from my mahi. Within the marae, we provided community service for people who had to do their sentences in the community. I am passionate in working with people coming out of prison and gangs and have worked in the prisons over the last 7 years including with high profile prisoners and within maximum (security), providing Māori traditional therapy and cultural support. I have worked with the prisoners providing support for Custodial and Management in respect to death on site and have supported in many situations of conflict resolution, often called upon for liaison and facilitation within gangs to reduce further issues. I'm presently the Cultural Specialist Wellbeing support for prisons. I have been in the role of Cultural Advisor and Māori Consultant and Senior Māori Traditional Practitioner, Manuera Life Development Services Ltd, since 2011 and Māori Consultant for Active Plus. I am passionate about working both with our people and all ethnicities in the way of manaakitanga, wairuatanga and whakawhanaungatanga, within the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. I am the knowledge holder and work in programme design in Te Ao Māori models of practice for Manuera Life.
