Position Papers

On behalf of the Social Work Alliance, we are pleased to share this position paper: “Strategic Priorities for Social Work Workforce Planning and Development in Aotearoa New Zealand.”

This position paper has been developed over the past year by sector leaders within the Social Work Alliance and provides an internal view of the key challenges we face across the social work profession, many of which are already well known. We position these key challenges within 8 priorities for action, which, we think, could strengthen our workforce and improve services to whānau and communities across Aotearoa New Zealand.

We hope that this paper will help inform the Social Worker Workforce Strategy mahi currently being led by the Social Workers Registration Board and go some way to influence Ministerial funding decisions about social work services.

In essence, this paper is a call to action across the sector. We hope it creates a foundation for shared understanding of the issues we face and inspires organisational-level responses to the challenges we have outlined. In this vein, we invite you to consider how you may be able to contribute towards this important mahi.

Te amorangi ki mua, te hapai ō ki muri
The leader doesn’t advance forward without the support of those behind them

We encourage you to share this paper widely with all who care about supporting whānau and communities, advocating for a sustainable social work workforce now and into the future, to do so.

Who is the Social Work Alliance?

The Social Work Alliance is an independent coalition of social work system leaders from across Aotearoa New Zealand, who collaboratively provide strategic advice and leadership on behalf of the social work profession. Originally convened by the SWRB in 2013 to inform the establishment of mandatory registration, it is now an independent collaboration between major social work services, tertiary education providers, professional bodies (ANZASW, TWSWA, CSWEANZ, SSPA), Toitū te Waiora and unions.
